AH Exp – Electrical Phenomena 03 – Force on a conductor in a magnetic field and orientation of the wire
Aim – To investigate the relationship between the force exerted on a conductor in a magnetic field, and the orientation of the wire
Instructions
▪ Note the reading on the balance. This is the mass of the magnets and yoke.
▪ The wire is initially at 90 degrees to the magnetic field.
▪ Click on the red buttoned switch to close the contacts of the switch.
▪ Note the reading on the balance and hence determine the force on the conductor due to the magnetic field.
▪ Alter the orientation of the wire in 10 degree steps. In each case note the reading on the balance.
▪ The protractor is provided to help monitor the angle of the wire to the magnetic field.
▪ Plot a graph to show the relationship between the force on the conductor and the angle between the wire and the magnetic field.
