AH Exp – Electrical Phenomena 06 – Self inductance of a coil

Aim – To investigate the variation of current with time in an inductive circuit and to determine the incuctance of the inductor

Instructions

The contacts of the switch are open and the current in the circuit is zero.

▪ Click the red buttoned switch to close the switch. The timer starts timing.
▪ Note the value of the current every 5 seconds. (This may require two people, one to call the time, the second to note the current)
▪ Draw a graph of current against time.
▪ The gradient of the graph is equal to dI/dt
▪ Find the gradient of the graph at time t=0
▪ Use the equation E=-LdI/dt to find the inductance L of the inductor. At t = 0, E= -6 V
