AH Exp – Mechanics 02 – Measurement of angular acceleration
Aim – To measure the angular acceleration of a rotating turntable
Instructions
▪ Start the turntable rotating and ensure that it has reached its final steady speed.
▪ Start the timer when the marker passes a certain point.
▪ Allow the turntable to rotate a certain number of times.
▪ Stop the timer after this number of revolutions.
▪ Calculate the angular velocity of the turntable, measured in rad s-1
θ = 1/2 α t2 (ω0 = 0)
▪ Repeat the experiment several times and find the mean value.
▪ Determine the uncertainty in the result using (maximum value – minimum value) / number of readings
▪ Repeat the experiment and find a value for the mean angular acceleration.
▪ Determine the uncertainty in this result.
