AH Exp – Mechanics 07 – Variation of period of oscillation with mass for a spring
Aim – To investigate the relationship between the period of oscillation of a spring and the mass attached to the spring.
Instructions
The spring is suspended vertically form a stand and a mass is attached to the end of the spring.
▪ Pull the spring down and release it so that the mass starts oscillating.
Note that this “virtual” spring does not lose energy and the oscillation is maintained.
In practice of course, the amplitude of the oscillation will decrease.
▪ Use the timer to determine the period of oscillation.
▪ Repeat for other masses.
▪ Draw a graph to show the relationship between the period of oscillation and the mass
